BBC TV to do CB radio feature.

Post by Citizens Bandwidth on Sun May 02, 2010 6:46 pm

I have been contacted by a TV company working for the BBC, wanting to do a short feature on CB radio.
They want some CB users to be on the show. Unfortunately, their budget does not extend to travelling far from London - and they have only given a few days notice...

“Are you a CB Radio enthusiast based in or near London, would you like to be interviewed in a short film for BBC1s The One Show about your passion for CB? Did you first meet your loved one over the airwaves? If so, please contact Cris Warren from Icon Films, 0117 317 1717 / cris.w@iconfilms.co.uk for a chat about possibly appearing in our film which we will be shooting on May 6th 2010.”

These chances to promote CB radio do not come often, our local "Eyeball" was featured on TV in the mid 1990s.

Regards, Peter.

Given the number of active UK CB forums that there are, this shows researchers are not exactly on top of their jobs if they did not spend a few minutes posting on these.
Personal experience of journalists wanting contact with individuals within a specific group, I would say forums are the normal method of establishing that contact as it is such an easy method & one which would normally put them in direct contact with a cross section of that group.

CB users are spread thinly across many groups and forums. Some groups and forums are just about dead, so the guy could have spent days signing up to groups and sending the message. It was much easier to make one call, and let someone else do his job.

Having sent the message to so many groups and forums that I feel like a spammer, and so far only finding two places with responses (none saying that they are interested), I know how long it can take. The feature is only about 10 minutes, I would imagine that he has very little time to spend on research for it. He also had only a week, including a bank holiday weekend.

Lazy? Maybe, but more likely under pressure to stay within a tiny budget because the BBC have wasted their fat handout on taxis, fake "detector vans" and overpaid presenters. This guy is one of the people who do all the work so that the presenters can get all the credit.

73s, Peter.

Icon Films decided to abandon London and go to Northampton. Maybe no responses in the short time they gave. No idea yet of when it will be on TV, sounds like it may be a while.

Anyhow, I have some photos of the filming. Putting them in the next issue of the magazine.

It was certainly interesting, they featured a HGV driver who seemed to loose the ability to speak coherently when he picked up a CB microphone.

I certainly don't think it will do anything to promote radio as a worth while hobby for anyone with a brain cell.

First thing to note. Just so that you get an idea of the level that this is being piched at.....They used Gyles Brandreth to present the item...Enough said?
The whole item is based around 1970's American slang, with subtitles for those with a brain cell. Members of the public are asked to use a handheld CB to talk to a plonker from the show sitting near by in a van. These members of the public were given cards with American slang on to send a message to said van based idiot who returns a message...All messages have sub titles.
The programme talks to a CB shop owner whose idea of defending the hobby is to say he knows people who have met via CB & subsequently got married, no defence or justification for CB given other than that.
Gyles Brandretrh talks to an HGV driver who shows how he uses CB to get traffic information. Sadly however said HGV driver looses his ability to speak coherently when he picks up CB microphone, so even the non American slang needs sub titles. If you can imagine an auctioneer so drunk his speech is slurred beyond comprehension, but his speed of speech remains fast, you will have some idea of what this HGV driver sounds like.
On returning to the studio, a presenter says something along the lines of no wonder it never caught on..
The programme showed CB'ers as being simpletons, partly because of the way they presented it & partly because of the CB'ers who took part.
