Sota....Activators and Chasers...

Post by 2E0 TDX on Mon Jul 19, 2010 9:16 pm

Are there any Sota activators or Chasers on the forum?

If any of you are interested in Sota, what particular aspect of this part of the hobby do you enjoy....Is it the buzz of getting that first answer to the 'CQ Sota', call or is the 'Shack sloth' award more appealing to you!

Both chasers and activators are equally important, as without both, an important part of the hobby would become pretty pointless.

I'd be very interested to hear any comments about your thoughts on this subject please!

regards, Neil.

Im both activator and chaser..

Id have been oop a hill today if weather wasn't damp and lowish cloud.....

I prefer activating if and when I get the chance to get out...I don't drive Sad
I depend on XYL or others,
I have started using 4m FM first then falling back to 2m to finish the day whilst still trying 4m at some other point in the activation.

Getting out on the hills is great fun, fresh air, tired aching legs and the chance of a good long distance contact ( VHF), I do not do 'HF'.

Did my first Munro since 1975 there in May.

Get out have some fun, all sometimes you need is a handie....
I started my 'activating' using a Puxing 888 2m fm handie , 7m fibreglass fishing pole and a SOTA beam, I tend now to use a JPole on both 2m and 4m ( I must fix the coax for the beam)

I have a PYE PFX & find that the nice large ducks that are available Second hand & a 2 meter tail of wire attached to the chassis makes a world of difference to distance on 4.
Being from Norfolk, unless I visit the Linconshire Fens, SOTA is not an option, but I do sometimes visit Churches if they have open days on thier towers, I have also operated from up a couple of Lighthouses & from the top of a couple of Wind Mills & I keep thinking if I can set up remote operation via a handie suspended under a Kite I can work BIG distances, as we have a local kite club who have CAA permission for high kite operation.

This is the bees knees for portable use, use with a fibreglass fishing pole, walking pole( utilising both poles or a taped to a fence post) or even a tree limb ( I've tried it and works well)

What I carry for a good hilltop basic VHF( 2m or 4m FM) is all here

I tried the link thingy but it won't work for me....sob
