I have voted for the Icom as I like my 706Mk2G. The Menu is very easy to use unlike my Yaesu VX7R. The build quality is very good.

I have voted for Yaesu.
Mainly because they provide excellent radios at such great prices but also because once in a while they produce a class leader like the FT817, the FT209/690/790 or the FT101.

That is indeed a tricky one, and myself I have voted for Yaesu much the same reasons as daxi. They have made a vast contribution to the world of radio and who knows now Motorola may have there hands on them

I prefer Icom as the quality of there gear is ahead of the others in my opion .Kenwood was good but appear to have ceased trying to compete with the others .Yaesu as it has been said are good for there prices .It's good to see that Yaesu are now starting to have software updates to improve there gear .The question is : has the transceivers improved that much over the older gear considering the prices they go for these days .The last expensive radio i had was an Icom Pro 111 and do I think it was worth the money ,hmmm no and the reason it was used on a G5RV ,had it been a beam for weak signal working then that's a different story .If we all liked the same gear manufacturers would have problems .

The price of radios are much, much lower now than they were. If you look at say the 1980's radios are far less expensive to buy than they were then. A new FT857 for example costs less than I paid for my second hand FT101 back in the early 80's.
And yes radios have improved, I love classic radios like the Pye Vanguard, FTDX401 & the FT690II that I have & I if it were practical I would not use modern radios, but size & weight alone makes that impractical for a lot of the radio work I do.
Modern radios are in many many ways far better than radios of 20 years ago & if you want to talk about the home built 807 self oscillator radios or the ex WWII radios that I started with then it's a massive massive step forward.

The G5RV is not a very good antenna, it's known to be deaf & that's why I if I have the choice I always use a Windom (off centre fed dipole.) But it's also the reason I normally use an end fed for special events as it's simple, very easy to erect & performs as well as the most popular amateur antenna, the G5RV.

Hi Daxi ,the G5 is a compromise ant and yes it is deaf compared to various others .Saying that I've worked VK on a 1/2 sized one .If the conditions are there anything will work within reason .What I was trying to get across was ,is an icom 7700 ,Yaesu 2000 ect going to hear any better than an old Kenwood TS830 ,Yaesu FT102 ? .Has technology really improved as much as the large manufacturers would have us believe?.Even audio wise I've heard some lovely sounding old valve sets and without all the extras (money) being fitted .

I would say technology has improved, in the sense that it is now so much cheaper to produce.

Even though I have a Kenwood and think its great I have voted for Yaesu as my new FT-817ND is the most amazing thing Ive ever used, it can be used in the shack qrp or with linear, mobile or even self powered portable with all modes and all bands in such a tiny package, dont tell the Mrs but Im in love again lol.

Lol Phil,

What a great radio. I had one last year for SOTA and decided to sell it as I hardly used it. I found it a little fiddly and the menu structure is not the easiest but nether the less was amazing what it offered. I now have the middle one FT-857 :-) so it can't have put me off that much...

Was looking at the 857, but am now under orders to save money for a potential relocation back to the UK, shame I was given these standing orders after I just ordered a moxon from hpsd Smile

I have a Yaesu FT 747GX and I have had NO bad radio reports and NOT been told once I am off freq. Not sure how old the radio is but I have had it for 12 months about.

I like the look of the Kenwoods but have never had one to comment on.

The Lincoln I have is much the same as the Yaesu less the cheap pwr mic on it.

Yaesu voted for.

Since I posted for Icom owning the IC-706Mk2G I have had the Icom IC2820 x2 with the DV board and an IC-E92 with the GPS mic. I have also had a Yaesu FTM-10E with Bluetooth and a VX-7R. Hmm only some of the radios. I like the Kenwood 480 Sat but never had one, little put off it's only HF.

I stick with my first decision, Icom as the menu is clear...

Hi
I have 2 Yaesu FT897D's and a Yaesu FT7800.
I used to Have a Kenwood TS2000.
I find the Yaesu FT897D's a good line up as i can have any combination of bands.
Where as the TS2000 is limited to 2m or 70cm on the sub band and hf,10 or 6m on the main. Also found the TS2000 deaf on 2m and 70cm.

Are the Chinese about to shake things up a bit?

Post by G7AQK on Sun Jan 23, 2011 9:42 pm

My last new rig was a Yaesu FT2800 which is manufactured in China. Before that I had purchased a couple of cheap Feidaxin handhelds direct from Hong Kong. All of them offered excellent value for money. I see now that the Chinese are building cheap dual band handhelds and some dual band mobiles are on their way. At the moment you will probably need to pay at least 600 for a basic HF rig from the leading manufacturers. If the Chinese can produce something similar for less than 400 I think they will corner the market.

Having said that I am currently looking for a cheap second hand HF rig. My manufacturer preferences are:

1. Icom
2. Kenwood
3. Yaesu
4. Alinco

Of course, if the right rig comes along at the right price ......................................

Voted again and I still love Yaesu! now its all I have FT840, FT817ND, FT51R are now my babies and I love them all, so this time its dont tell the Mrs or the KIds LOL (ref old login 26WF183) Love the feel the sound and the portbility of them, yes the menus can be pain but you soon get used to them and it becomes second nature just like windows Vista and 7. Would realy like something older for the collection with valves but they still demand silly money and she who must be obeyed says no!
