Very expensive for what they are. (did I really loose 3 of them and never get billed)

The radios talk a good QSO but in reality they may aswell be used to lash down an antenna.

The VHF ones were always prone to over heating and needed an expensive antenna tuner to get any distance on it. The HF sets were ok. You could switch on, attach set to a chicken wire fence and off you go. ( I know I have done it)

But as squaddies being resourceful, we cut corners and got the kit to work for us. Did us well in the Gulf in 2003.

But as time goes on and technology advances the MOD bought BOWMAN. Thats another thread, though happy to answer questions if you have any. Give us back CLANSMAN any day.

I started out on Echo Charlie using ex military kit. Things like 19 sets & R155's, etc & know of one 19 set that had the antenna laid on the ground which continued to TX very happily.
The station operator saw the DTI close to the broadcast site as he left & phoned a friend asking him to shut it down. But unfortunately all the friend did was lower the antenna Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad So Mike Hawkin's the local DTI officer at the time, being the nice guy he was, switched it off.
