Should SSB Radio's be legal?

Post by 2W0PWR on Thu Oct 04, 2007 12:04 am

Haven't time's changed?

In my opinion that 27mhz should be made legal. If your not giving TVI and your using the radio like it should be then what harm are you doing?
The thing I see is there trying to make everyone become an M3 to take people off 27MHz to free it up?

Could this be true?

SSB 11M radio is only illegal if you get caught using it lmao Razz

Think to manage a legal system would be hard in the UK. Here we have legal SSB on 26965-27405 where in the summer am sure you hear people calling in the UK as there is FM legal.

Could be hard to make happen but there are those still lobbying, albeit not with the same passion as years gone by as it is easy now to become an amateur and make the world legally

The replies are really interesting. There was a time when many of the business people in this hobby were lobbying for SSB, these included:

Albert Bertrana (President, Mr ASC) Now retired
Dr. Schnorrenbourg (Alan Albrecht)

They were on a working committee that was overseeing the chances of a legal SSB system, some countries took it and some did not.

BUT, think now of all the churches, Mullahs and the like screaming on the CEPT, then add to this the foreigners in the summer, the muppets and then add onto this the SSB pumping from everywhere. Power here is just 4w allowed and thats not alot, am not sure but really think it could be a waste as they will never allow 27410-27855 for legal operations as there are services in different parts of EU using this.

Am not against it, but think its either better to get the ticket, or sit on a hill with a BIG antenna and this way have the fun with the loss of the bad mouths, muppets, keyers and dj's

I did crap on them mock tests at first.. keep doing them over and over again, look at what you got wrong and look what answer they're after. In the end you'll constantly get above 90% honest.

Don't forget the ones regarding frequency allocation, in the real test you get the sheet so you just need to read it off. Same with the frequency/wavelength question.

Seems you only really need to know the following :-

Licence conditions & practices :- i.e. 10watts max, callsign at the begining or end of every over (or every 15 mins). Long Cq's on <10m, VHF/UHF short Cq's.
Format of Callsigns
No homebrew for M3's etc
Band Plans (all given in exam)

Technical :- Ohms law (V=IxR) & Power = VxI
Horizonatal/Vertical polarisation and difference between dipole/yagi/vertical/wire.
EMC/RFI etc, basically gets into everything Smile
Little bit on propogation i.e. which frequencies are mainly affected (HF)
VHF/UHF line of site comms.

Safety :- turn the bugger off before you work on it. Don't grab hold of someone who's being electrocuted. Turn the power off then laugh.

Once you have done loads of the mock tests it becomes drilled in... see I did shit on my first attempt.
